月光菩薩曰。我能堪任與諸眾生畢竟安樂。
日光菩薩曰。我能堪任於諸眾生未純熟者令得成熟。
在〔藥師琉璃光如來本願功德經〕中說，藥師如來國土中有二菩薩摩訶薩，一名日光遍照，二名月光遍照，是彼無量無數菩薩眾之上首，次補佛處。 此乃日光菩薩及月光菩薩，與藥師如來一起，形成莊嚴的「東方三聖」造像。
日光菩薩的日光喻智慧光，溫暖光耀，直照萬物而使之顯露能見。
月光菩蕯手中持青蓮花，蓮上有半月形，而月光喻慈光，清涼寧靜，於黑暗中，發出皎潔光芒，導邪入正。
